Culinary Culture of Shingu

Surrounded by mountains with rich forest and the Kumano-nada Sea, Shingu has a rich selection of cuisine.
From the sea, there are large fish like bonito being hauled in Miwasaki Fishing Port, as well as locally caught smaller fish such as sardine, mackerel, and flying fish.
Especially the Pacific saury, being firmed up the black current, is a perfect match with vinegar and rice, making the Pacific saury sushi (Sanma zushi), one of Shingu’s most famous cuisines.
Other specialties include local cuisines such as Mehari zushi, rice ball wrapped by pickled mustard leaf, and tea porridge, making Shingu a treasure trove for the gourmets.
