Kushima Island ・Suzushima Island

Experience the dynamic movement of the earth

You can see Kushima Island and Suzushima Island on the coastal line alongside other strange rocks from the Miwasaki fishing port. The islands are recognized as geosites as parts of the Nanki Kumano Geopark area, and it's possible to observe more than 120 kinds of plant with 51 different varieties as well as the symbol flower of Shingu, the Hamayu, in Kushima Island. There are also 62 species of plants in Suzushima Island. In Shingu, nine spots including Kushima Island, Suzushima Island, Koya-zaka Slope, Ojigahama Coast and Mt. Horaisan are certified as geosites.

What is Nanki Kumano Geopark

There are three different geologic terrane formed by subduction in the Nanki Kumano Geopark. There are nine cities, towns and villages recognized as Nanki Kumano Geopark including Shingu City, Shirahama Town, Susami Town, Nachikatsuura Town, Kushimoto Town etc.
