Kawaraya Yokocho Store Alley

An homage to the prosperous river trading period

This is a recreation of the commercial district, called Kawaraya, that is said to have existed from the Edo period (1603 - 1868) through to the Showa period (1926 - 1989) at the mouth of the Kumano-gawa River. The modern Kawaraya is located near Kumano Hayatama Taisha Grand Shrine. At its peak, there were hundreds of restaurants, blacksmiths and inns here, catering to visitors to the area. When the river swelled, the stores would close shop, setting up again once the water subsided again. This area has become popular with visitors coming to shop for souvenirs, enjoy food and snacks, and for sightseeing.
