Sato Haruo Memorial Museum (Temporarily Closed)

A memorial museum remodeled from the old house of Shingu's representative poet

This is the memorial hall of Sato Haruo, a writer born in Shingu, who wrote the lyrical poem "Song of Sanma". It was repurposed from his western-style mansion, designed by the younger brother of the Shingu-born architect Nishimura Isaku. Originally located in the Bunkyo Ward of Tokyo, where Haruo lived from 1927 until his death in 1964, it was later relocated to Shingu, inside the grounds of Kumano Hayatama Taisha Grand Shrine. Visitors can tour the inside and enjoy the characteristic structures of the mansion such as its sunroom and drawing room on the first floor. On the second floor are exhibitions of Haruo's study room and his precious first edition books.

Main Entrance

From summer to autumn, the Chinese trumpet creeper plant, beloved by Haruo, blossoms on the arched entrance.

2nd Floor Exhibition Room

This room displays the first editions of Haruo’s books of poetry, novels, and essays along with his drawings.

Sunroom

The sunroom facing the 2-story hall.
